    Debating Ethical Expertise.Norbert L. Steinkamp, Bert Gordijn & Henk A. M. J. ten Have - 2008 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 18 (2):173-192.
This paper explores the relevance of the debate about ethical expertise for the practice of clinical ethics. We present definitions, explain three theories of ethical expertise, and identify arguments that have been brought up to either support the concept of ethical expertise or call it into question. Finally, we discuss four theses: the debate is relevant for the practice of clinical ethics in that it (1) improves and specifies clinical ethicists' perception of their expertise; (2) contributes to improving the perception (...)

This collection of philosophical studies is dedicated to Prof. Buytendijk on the occasion of his retiring from the chair of philosophy at the University of Utrecht. The importance of the publication far surpasses the mere fact of honouring an outstanding scholar. For Buytendijk has indeed been one of the most active pioneers in the working out of a new approach to problems in the field of psychology and has been, together with other collaborators, instrumental in elaborating a new ’style’ as (...)

  20. Ethical Expertise Revisited: Reply to Giles Scofield.Norbert L. Steinkamp, Bert Gordijn & Henk A. J. M. ten Have - 2008 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 18 (4):385-392.
This reply to Giles Scofield's critique of the authors' article in the June 2008 issue of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal highlights two main topics. First, contrary to what Scofield suggests, using the terms "ethics" and "morality" interchangeably constitutes an oversimplification that blurs important distinctions. Second, in a representative democracy, ethical expertise and consultation need not generate a "tragic choice" of the kind Scofield has in mind.

  23. Rethinking Ethics in the Light of Jewish Thought and the Life Sciences.Norbert M. Samuelson - 2001 - Journal of Religious Ethics 29 (2):209 - 233.
Judaism in the twentieth century began to return to its scriptural, communal roots after a centuries-long detour through Greek-influenced natural philosophy, a detour during which science and ethics were assumed to be partners and Jewish ethics drew heavily on natural philosophy and science. Twentieth-century philosophical ethics and science, particularly biological science, have developed in such a way as to make any continuation of that historical partnership problematic. This is not altogether regrettable because the problematizing of this long-standing partnership has driven (...)

  38. Reflections on the distinctness of judaism and the sciences.Norbert M. Samuelson - 2011 - Zygon 46 (2):396-412.
Abstract. The object of this essay is to explain what there is about discussions of Judaism and the sciences that is distinctive from discussions about religion in general and the sciences. The description draws primarily but not exclusively from recent meetings of the Judaism, Medicine, and Science Group in Tempe, Arizona. The author's Jewish Faith and Modern Science, together with a selective bibliography of writings in this subfield, are used to generate a list of science issues—focused around the religious doctrines (...)

    Creation and the Symbiosis of Science and Judaism.Norbert M. Samuelson - 2002 - Zygon 37 (1):137-142.
It seems to me that the critical questions that science and natural philosophy raise for Jewish theology are the following: Does God evolve? Does the universe have or even need an interpretation, specifically with reference to the fact that most of the universe most of the time is uninhabitable, and there may be many more than one universe? Does the universe need a beginning? What is distinctive about human consciousness, intelligence, and ethics in the light of evidence for evolution from (...)

    Ethics of Globalization and the AIDS Crisis from a Jewish Perspective.Norbert M. Samuelson - 2003 - Zygon 38 (1):125-139.
This essay explores what Jewish ethics has to say about globalization in relation to the AIDS crisis. Special attention is paid to the consequences in affirming current intellectual trends to transcend traditional limits in both society and thought for rethinking traditional Jewish values. The discussion proceeds from two presuppositions. The first is that there is an intimate connection between ethics, science, and politics. The second is that the history of Jewish ethics involves three distinct forms that are generally correlated but (...)

  45. On the Symbiosis of Science and Religion: A Jewish Perspective.Norbert M. Samuelson - 2000 - Zygon 35 (1):83-97.
Three theses are explored, the first two historical and the third philosophical‐theological: (1) throughout most of the history ofWestern civilization, science and religion have been closely connected with each other, and each has benefited from the connection; (2) the belief that science and religion have always been in conflict is not based on the actual history of either set of institutions; and (3) structurally a relationship between the two institutions is in the interest of both. By religion here I mean (...)

    Three comparative maps of the human.Norbert M. Samuelson - 1996 - Zygon 31 (4):695-710.
This article is a response to the 1994 Star Island conference on the “Decade of the Brain” from a Jewish perspective. After a brief introduction about the logical function of models and maps, I compare and contrast three models of the human: Ezekiel's vision of the chariot in the Hebrew Scriptures, Franz Rosenzweig's geometry of the human face in Der Stern der Erlosung (the Star of Redemption), and a standard anatomical picture of the human brain. Whereas Rosenzweigs face is seen (...)
